I've been meaning to write to you for a while now and look in on how you're doing, considering some of the rumours I've heard about you and your lot. Well, I guess rumours isn't exactly the right word for it. But in any case, I've been wondering if you're all right.

Actually, that's not quite true. I've been guessing that you, yourself, are fine and I'm also guessing that Matt is fine otherwise there would've been a bloody great lot of explosions by now, but it's worth asking the question.

And have you got anywhere on the Kira question? I've been looking into things, but he's a damned slippery little fish, he is.

I am assuming that your lack of correspondence implies that everything is proceeding well, and that you are keeping yourselves out of trouble. I appreciate your patience on this matter and I trust it will continue throughout your next objectives. To begin with, Matt is to return to Winchester as soon as he is able. Current events have made it necessary for extra security measures to be put in place there. I am counting on his rather impressive recent performance in that area to accomplish this. He will be there as long as it is required.

You yourself will remain in London. See to it that your forces are rebuilt and your position there is cemented. For convenience's sake, Door will assist you in Matt's absence. Consider this your top priority for the moment. I will assume that this will not be a problem for you.

Your work on the Kira case so far as, as usual, been invaluable. I have a new assignment for you, to be worked on independently. It relates to the recent incident at the penitentiary in LA, the details of which I will assume you are by now more familiar with. As of now the immediate cause of the breakout is still unknown and considering the level of security in place there I believe you will understand why I would like to take a closer look at the matter. If it is possible I would like you to find out everything you can about that incident.

However, your main priority is this: there is an individual that may have escaped the slaughter of the surviving convicts by Kira. He goes by the name Beyond Birthday. I expect him to be found, or his death verified, at any cost. He is extremely dangerous; you should consider him on the level of your colleagues at the very least.

I can put you in touch with the agent that solved his case, although I believe she has been retired for some time.

I'm sure that you have already thought of this, but in the interest of safety (as well as sharing information) I should mention that I believe the LA prison debacle is the work of Kira. I would not have thought so, had all of the criminals not died after their escape, but as they did, I suspect it was orchestrated at least in part to create the impression that Kira is a god-like, messianic figure, seeking to protect the people from the dangerous element.

That may not have been his entire motivation, but I don't know enough about the circumstances surrounding the breakout to reasonably speculate.

I have reconsidered the situation regarding Misa Amane. It will be necessary to hold her longer than I originally instructed in order to determine her purpose for being found in the area. I expect you to do whatever is required to gain this information, and I will continue to monitor her progress.

Incidentally, the next time you and Near have finished with your reviews, there is no need to send more than one copy of the files. If it is at all possible for either of you to avoid that in the future I suggest you do so.

L is occupied at the moment, so he asked me to forward the attached information. Also, he instructed me to pass along his request that you not defenestrate or otherwise dispose of the laptop, as that would cut the line of communication and therefore be considered a violation of your agreement.

It may not be necessary to say this, but there is no longer any need to consider Mello a suspect for these killings. However, you will continue to monitor his movements and report with regular updates. He may not be directly involved but I believe he still has a part to play yet.

I assume you must have heard about the most recent reported deaths, as well. I would like to hear what thoughts you might have about them.

This is actually for Mello, but talking to one of you is as good as talking to the other one anyway.

So, my best friend is dead. My best bloody friend. She was already dead when Mello was over here, but they didn't find her until he'd left. Heart attack.

For the last few hours, I've been trying to put together what she was up to. She was involved in a lot of random shit, really, nothing big except that she did get charged for some manslaughter rubbish that happened a few weeks ago when she got into a spat with an old friend. The friend pulled a knife on her, but she was better than him. Better than him, but not good enough, it seems like. I don't know, you might've heard about that if you watch the tv enough.

But in the past few days, she hadn't done anything differently. She ran a few rounds - she delivered for me, sometimes, and she was a liaison with some of my clients. I'm attaching a list of my clients. I'm trusting you not to do anything rash with them, but if it's one of them we've got to find that out, too.

I'm going to call Red and Sand as soon as I hit send on this thing.

But you two, at this point, I'm just about ready to run to him. They got Sasha. That's not right. I feel sick. It's not right.

I'm returning to Tokyo shortly, and should be back at the hotel by tomorrow afternoon. In the meantime, here is a tidbit to "chew" upon: a report from Door which arrived just moments ago. It certainly sheds an interesting light on recent events, although I am not entirely sure what light that is.

Mello just left my flat. He came round to talk about this run of dead underworlders in London and thereabouts... right, well, I guess L will probably know about that. Anyway, he's pretty tense about that whole situation, and he wanted to pool our resources. It was a strange conversation, but since we're all at risk considering our positions, it was important to go over.

Anyway, we talked about the people who've gone down, and what they had in common and what they didn't. And he told me he thought whoever's doing it must be someone like us, someone from the House, or someone who could have been. I've got to contact a few old friends, mostly Red and Sand, and investigate their friends, that sort of thing. He asked me to tell him anything I come up with, and he said he'd do the same thing.

I did suggest contacting L, but he said there wasn't any point until we had evidence, and that L would probably suspect one of us already anyway.

And that about it. Except that he knows my bloody name, but that's probably all right. I don't think he'll do anything dodgy with it. We've got to have each other's backs, after all.

I assume you are aware of the situation currently developing in London at the moment regarding the deaths of a number of criminals. If not, I suggest you quickly familiarise yourself with it. I have reason to believe that Mello is involved somehow, but the evidence is not conclusive enough for me to proceed on that assumption. Therefore I am hoping that you will be of assistance in evaluating this matter.

I do expect a prompt response.

Right, so I don't know how relevant this is, but I figure I ought to let you know anyway, just in case.

Matt's currently sleeping at my flat. It seems he and Mello have suffered a bit of a falling out - he says it wasn't a row, more of a personal issue. Anyway, there's a little bit of a rift there, but I don't think it'll last. He's already said he's going to go back. Also, I'm pretty sure he's carrying firearms, but for obvious reasons I didn't ask.

Well, I think that's it. Otherwise it's just a lot of personal drama rubbish that I don't think anyone but them cares about. If there are any other questions, you know where to find me.

I've met with them again. Right now, they're sharing a rather posh room at [ ], but I can't guarantee they'll stay there for long. They seem to be doing quite well for themselves in any case. As it turns out, they don't a functional computer right now because Mello broke the old one during a "weird night" - don't know what that means, but it is what it is, whatever that is. Either way, it should be a moot point soon enough, as Matt spent the entire time I was there piecing together a new one.

Speaking of that, Mello's quite the alpha wolf isn't he! The boy just has to throw a look and the other one scurries around, bending over backwards to make him happy. It's a little weird, but then again Mello's a little intense so I suppose it's understandable not to want to argue with him too much.

Other than that, we talked a bit about a few of the other alums none of the dodgy sorts, just the medical types and the law types. Mello mentioned staying in contact with me, but of course he may have just been saying that. We'll have to see.

I have been contacted by Door. Apparently she has met with Mello and Matt. According to her, they contacted her and stayed for a short time, catching up and being generally pleasant. She did feel that Mello may have been feeling her out a bit, but was not certain for what purpose.

They have not yet returned, though Mello did suggest they would remain in contact.

Apparently Near has spoken to Matt as of this morning.

As for the note, he has forwarded it along. I must admit I am a bit surprised to see that he is capable of using such archaic technology as, for example, a pen and paper. Perhaps he has been a clandestine luddite all this time. Of course, the handwriting is quite unfortunate, but even so.
